Why are you willing to put up with all of the heartbreak and rejection inherent in the path you’ve chosen? What is it inside you that makes you need to share your gift with others? What does your music do for the people who love it? What do you want people who embrace your music to be inspired to do? Dig deep and find within you, the answers to these questions, and you will know where to find and build your audience.
- Figure out why you’re even doing all of this in the first place.
- You are your own market research. Look to yourself and your closest friends to model the type of audience you need to reach.
- Find common threads of emotion or message in your music and figure out where to reach people open to those themes.
- Where will your music be best received? Maybe a coffee shop isn’t the best venue for your death metal band. Or perhaps your vegan message is lost on the attendees of the Sunday Beef BBQ Slam.
Spend some time answering these questions and you’ll get to the core of who you are as a musician and where to find your audience. Then you can get creative with your collaborations, partnerships, and promotions to grow your audience and build your brand.
