It’s time to get back to basics, folks. File this one under beginners and those who have lost their way. You are at the center of this and your music career will only be as successful or rewarding as you make it. You have to put the work in and continue to invest time, effort, and money in upping your game. Of course, you should apply this sage advice to your craft, but you should also regularly upgrade your equipment, learn new skills, and read books or take courses on the topics of finance and business. Oh, you know what else helps? Financial freedom or flexibility, so spend some time on that too.
- Information is literally everywhere. Carve some time out to explore tutorials on YouTube or take an online course. Consider learning a skill you’d normally have to pay someone else to do like video editing, graphic design, or recording.
- Upgrade your equipment. New instruments or recording gear will expand your capabilities and could potentially inspire your next song.
- Use your skills to find flexible sources of income. You could play private or corporate events or use your new mixing or editing skills to earn money while still working in a creative space you find fulfilling.
- Learn how money and business work. You are an artist, but you must learn how to make smart financial and business decisions to get your art out to as many people as possible in a way that sustains your ability to create.
Okay, I admit it – I started this article feeling a little salty about the advice being too obvious, but it’s 100% accurate and important. Take this to heart and pursue improvement whenever possible and you’ll quickly surprise yourself with how much you can do yourself and just how far you can go.
